MadeiraBooks.com is an independent project that helps readers discover books about the Portuguese island of Madeira. Whether you are planning to walk the levadas, falling down the rabbit hole of 500-year-old fortified wine, tracing the island’s history of discovery and emigration, or simply looking for a good novel set among its cliffs and laurel forests, there is a book here for you.
What’s included
We currently list 195 books across 10 categories, from practical travel and hiking guides to botany, ornithology, scholarly history, photography and fiction. The collection includes practical guides, specialist references and older works. Availability varies by edition, seller and country; some titles may be out of print.
How we choose and verify
Entries include the title, author, language and edition information to help you compare books. We group titles by the question they answer: for example, a route guide, a road-and-walking guide and a separate map all help a walker in different ways. Our reading lists explain those differences, identify likely readers and point out the limitations of each format.
Bibliographic details and described contents are checked against publishers and other book records where possible. A linked publisher page is shown beside selected titles so you can inspect the edition. We do not score books from customer ratings, copy customer reviews or claim to have personally read or field-tested every title. Older and scarce books may have incomplete records; we make uncertainty visible rather than inventing a verdict.
An ISBN identifies a specific edition and can help you search a bookseller or library catalogue. Reprints, translations and ebooks may have different ISBNs. Before ordering, check the offered language, format, publication year and contents. For walking books, check the official Madeira trail status and access rules shortly before setting out; a printed route cannot report a live closure.
What we update
Reading-list pages show when their selection guidance was last revised. Edition details and route rules can change independently, so those dates are a record of our editorial work, not a promise that every seller listing or trail condition was checked that day. New titles enter the catalogue when they add a language, perspective or practical use that readers may otherwise miss. We keep older books when they offer historical or specialist value and label them by edition.
